Primal?? What's that?!

The Primal lifestyle follows the way of eating and exercising our ancestors practiced. Allowed foods include meats, nuts, seeds, veggies, and fruits. Avoid processed foods, all grains (including corn), all legumes (including peanuts, peas, and all beans), and sugars (especially high fructose corn syrup). You eat when you are hungry, you stop when you are satisfied. There you go! That's about it. How easy is that!!!! For more information check out Brandon's blog, http://www.spokaneprimal.com/. He has lots of information, recipes, and links. Stay tuned to watch our health progress!

Week 7 Tighten the belt!

Dave has lost enough that he had to tighten this belt to keep his pants up! I need to take all my jeans to the sewing machine and put some darts in the waist! I have to watch out for salt intake though. I can gain 2-3 lbs after eating a salty meal such as Plum Pork at Jade Garden. No I didn't have the rice, but I did have the eggroll with a little sweet & sour sauce.

Week 5 Keeping on!

Tried some new stuff this week. Put lemon peppered pork roast in the crock pot with sweet potatoes, apples, and oranges. Mix a little honey with lemon juice and pour over. Sprinkle with nutmeg and cook until done. It was sooooo good! I keep forgetting to take pictures though! I'm excited to try Brandon's Pumpkin Soup!

We both are disappointed in the slow weight loss but we think we are both eating too many nuts (absent mindedly while watching TV) and too much fruit. We have stocked up on more fresh veggies to munch instead. We also need to do the "e" word...yuck! I have this exercise bike sitting unused in our living room. I guess I better get on it! Hope it helps!!

Week 4 Back on Track

Home from our trip and back on track. We have both lost the weight we both gained while in Yellowstone.

Now that we are used to having only Primal approved food in the house I'm ready to start trying some new things. I went through my recipe box and pulled out a few recipes that I knew I could adapt easily. Now I need to get to the grocery store! Tonight we had tacos, using steamed cabbage leaves instead of taco shells or tortillas. It was awesome!!!

Anyway, it is all going well and we both feel better. I love getting up in the morning and actually feeling awake!

Week 3 OOPS!!!!

Oops! While we were on our trip to Yellowstone and Grand Teton National Parks we ate out for 2 meals every day. And of course the servings are enough for two people. And of course we couldn't let anything go to waste! Hence we both gained back some of the weight we lost.

The best meal was at the Million Dollar Cowboy Bar Steakhouse in Jackson Hole. It was rainbow trout stuffed with crab, wrapped with prosciutto, on top of a bed of fresh steamed garlic spinach, drizzled with some kind of wine sauce. It was so awesome! Loved the spinach so much I made some myself at home!

Total weight loss:
Dave: 5 lbs
LaDonna: 3 lbs

Week 2 Feeling Better Already!

This is soooo easy! I don't have to count carbs, or calories, or servings. I can eat when I'm hungry. Fruit satisfies the sweet tooth. I don't have cravings for chocolate or pasta or bread. Meat, nuts, fruits and veggies are doing the trick! I also am feeling more limber, not so achy in my joints and muscles. I also am having an easier time waking up in the mornings. Typical food day for me: a couple of eggs with bacon crumbles and fruit for breakfast, a sandwich made on romaine lettuce and fruit for lunch, a handful of nuts in the afternoon, meat and veggies for dinner, maybe fruit or nuts for a snack in the evening.

As for Dave, he says he just feel better. He used to drink equivelant to 6-12 cans of diet pop daily. Now he has one. He just hasn't been able to give it up totally yet but 1 is so much better than 6-12!!! He is drinking lots more water and loves v-8 juice with a little tabasco. He just switched to the low sodium variety though! The regular stuff has an incredible amount of sodium!! Dave's food day is similar but he is out and about town most days at lunch time. He has been doing salads at Subway for lunch.

I received the books. Now I just need time to read them!!

Week 1 Here we go!!

Dave came home from work with groceries- all fresh fruits and veggies. He is pumped. I'm still delaying. He has been cooking eggs for breakfast in the mornings, adding bacon crumbles. I'm enjoying it but the cereal was still there tempting me. I decided it all had to go. I started cleaning out the pantry and boxing it up. Everything that was left in the pantry was primal approved. It was time to do it right! Now I'm committed!

We had friends for dinner tonight. I had planned to have a rice dish several weeks ago so went ahead as planned. However, for Dave and I a shredded steamed cauliflower to use for our "rice." It was awesome. It actually had more flavor than rice!

I decided that if I was going to commit to this, I needed to have all the information I could get so I ordered the Primal Blueprint and Primal Cookbook. I can't wait until they get here!

The Decision

Dave's son Brandon has been eating Paleo/Primal for several years. We have heard him talk about it and how wonderful it is. Then Dave's daughter and son-in-law, Mike and Rhiannon, adopted the lifestyle change. We have been talking about it, asking questions, etc. for several months, tossing around whether to take the jump and give up our carbo lives. While visiting Mike and Rhiannon this past weekend, we decided to give it a try for a couple of months and see where we are. Dave jumped right in. I was hesitant, wanting to wait a week or so to start. I knew I needed to clean the carbs out of the house or I would eat them! I also knew I would have trouble not having cereal for breakfast. I don't have the time or clearness of head to do more than pour a bowl of cereal in the mornings! Dave agreed to fix my breakfast in the mornings. I will start this life plan next week- after I have a couple more bowls of cereal!
